That Was A Bit Of A Feisty Game
(Howard Crompton 15/01/2018)
A well deserved 2 - 1 win away to Egerton Lions that takes us to second place in the league. Egerton have arguably been our toughest opposition of the season so far - but we have played them twice and won both of them. It did get a bit too passionate at times which wasn’t helped with no formal Referee - big thanks to Pete for being the ‘Ref’ in the first half. We were easily the best time in the first half and we deserved a few goals. A first half penalty executed calmly by Josh - after Oliver made a great run into the box to get on the end of Ellis’s cross only for the Egerton defender to handle the ball in the box. The second half wasn’t managed quite as well by the Ref (Egerton parent) and there was some dubious off the ball activity which went unpunished. The Witton players were a complete match for the physical Egerton side and even when the guys were under pressure they remained a great footballing side. I was so pleased to see Callum coolly slot home our second goal but the boys shows real character to keep a very good Egerton at bay.
Cam - Man of the Match performance with some incredible saves and great handling of the ball. He kept us in the game today.
Olly - playing in an unconventional right back role he was involved in so much of today's game whether defending against a three man attack or taking a run up the right wing to support our attack. Great individual performance.
Lewis - Another solid performance at CB kept their centre forward quiet.
Connor - Good partnership with Lewis and Owen - he was awesome again today. Can’t remember him putting a foot wrong.
Owen (picture) some strong tackling across the team one of Owen’s resulted in a yellow card but what a great performance against their strongest play - well done.
Evan - we cannot underestimate what an important player Evan is to the team. Supportive to the defence but great going forward as well.
Oliver - A great game that was only spoilt by him being subjected to much off the ball ‘tackles’ and abuse that was unpleasant but he was fearless, feisty and frightening when he had the ball at his feet and he ran at players.
Josh - Commanding performance as he controls much of what goes on in our games. Always cool and composed with his penalties and he can feel proud of that performance.
Callum - what a performance even though he was suffering with earache he went back on in the second half and scored a great goal under pressure from their defenders.
Ellis - absolute quality on the pitch but also his work rate moving forward is incredible. They couldn’t cope with his runs and resorted to two players man marking him.
Ben - one of the best game I have seen him play. He has great natural ability and today that was matched with his determination and effort.
Jack - Energetic and a player who never gives up - played in midfield and up front today and looked comfortable in both positions.
Liam - nearly scored his first goal today and played his heart out where ever I asked him to play. This boy is getting better and better.
