9 1 Away Win At Nantwich

(Brian Roberts 20/01/2019)
Goals by Oliver M Luke (2) Ben (2) Josh Ellis Sean Tom

Well what a windy squally day for an important match as we took on the impressive Nantwich. They have had some good results against teams in our division. They were physically up for the game today and as ever we just played our football and ignored anything that wasn’t about us winning a game. Again on paper it looks a straight forward win and I always think it’s healthy when we can spread the scoring across so many players (seven) but we worked hard for this today.

The first goal was clever by Ben. We got a free kick on the right wing and it looked perfectly set up to loft a cross to our colossal players who relish the opportunity (George and Owen). Instead Ben took advantage of the strong wind and placed a great shot in the top left hand corner 1 – 0.

Almost straight from the kick off two of their players managed to be running at Dylan with the ball at their feet. Big mistake on their part as Dylan took ball and then two players out. Play had to be stopped briefly while the center forward received treatment – I smiled as I saw Dylan stood over him with the ball in his arms wondering what all the fuss was about.

The game was still quite tense – our back 3/5 seemed to soak up any pressure and all possession was up the other end of the pitch. Then our VC Josh had another moment of genius with a strike from at least 30 yards out through a crowd of players. Great goal 2 – 0.

Ellis worked so hard today up and down the left wing – it didn’t always work out but he never gave up and was rewarded with a great self-made goal as Nantwich struggled to keep up with his pace 3 – 0.

Well we thought that was it but Dylan had to come out and command his area again and then just before half time an impressive goal from Tom – he just ran at their defence and as much as they tried to push, kick and tackle him he evaded all their tactics and scored a typical Tom goal 4 – 0 at half time.

We realised by half time that while we were going to continue play our normal passing game it was not going to be a pretty game to watch and our next goal showed that as 4 or 5 players were involved in a scrappy attack to end up with the ball at Ben’s feet for a tap in to make it 5 – 0.

A rare moment straight after as we lost concentration and Nantwich threw a long ball over the top to get one goal back 5 – 1.

Their come back didn’t last long as Luke took the ball down the right wing and he decided not to wait for an invite instead struck a wonderful shot across the keeper and into the left hand side of the net. 6 – 1.

Within a few minutes Luke and Sean chasing down a ball upfront – Sean the first to the ball and with a cool head slots it past a helpless keeper 7 – 1.

Tom was back at it again running at the Nantwich defense and this time they took him to the ground and the Ref had no hesitation at pointing to the spot but where is Josh our penalty taker? Some crazy managerial decision to have him freezing on the bench – but Luke confidently placed the ball on the spot and then in the back of the net 8 – 1.

So pleased with our final goal as Oliver M has played so well the last three games and he took the ball down the RHS and from 15 yards out struck a shot to give their keeper no chance 9 – 1.

Very difficult conditions and we played a different style today but still ruthless still entertaining and still impressive Rock and Roll footy – well done boys.
