Simply Superb
(Nicola Bogue 30/01/2019)
The 17th game of the league season involved an away trip to Macclesfield to play Moss Rose Juniors U12 Silks on a bitterly cold and windy day. Moss Rose won the coin toss and elected to kick with the diagonal wind in the first half. The pitch was rather heavy too and with longish grass, it didn’t aid the crisp passing that the team have been working on recently. With the wind in the favour of Moss Rose it was a case of being patient in the first half, maintaining the team formation and discipline.
The opening exchanges were as expected in the midfield with each team struggling to penetrate each other’s well organised defence. It took until the 7th minute for the Warriors to create a goal scoring opportunity, Robbie ghosted into the box but his shot was saved by the goalkeeper with his legs.
The Warriors defence of Harley, Finn and Oli were strong, disciplined and prevented the Moss Rose team from putting any real pressure on Masons goal.
It took until the 20th minute to create another chance when Liam could have broken the deadlock but he shot over the bar. Just a minute later Brad had a good shot but hit the side netting.
As the half wore on, the Warriors were starting to get a stronger foot hold in the game. A brilliant offensive box to box move in the 24th minute started when Mason collected a Moss Rose cross and quickly played the ball out. Slick passing between Ewean, Harry and Robbie concluded with Ewean shooting just wide but the Warriors were starting to look like they would be the team to score first. Just two minutes later a delicate pass by Ewean beyond the Moss Rose defensive line put Robbie through and he finished with a low shot. 1:0.
As usual with the Warriors, one goal quickly became two with another excellent passing move involving Oli passing out of defence to Liam in Midfield, to Harry, to Ewean and finally that man Robbie to score again.
Half time 2:0.
The Warriors made a blistering start to the second half. Harry took a quick throw-in in the 31st minute to catch out the Moss Rose defence and put Ewean clear down the left wing. Ewaen cut the ball back to an advancing Harry who hit a rocket past the keeper from the edge of the box. 3:0.
Straight from the re-start the Warriors pressed and Ciaran won the ball back to feed Ewean who hit an angled drive into the far side of the goal. 4:0.
In the 35th minute Ciaran brought a great finger tip save out of the Moss Rose keeper with a looping shot. With the Warriors threatening to run riot Harry’s shot hit the underside of the bar and bounced down on the wrong side of the goal line before the Moss Rose defence cleared.
The Warriors were continuing to play some amazing football being driven by their sheer determination to score more. Robbie and Callum both went close but were thwarted by good saves from the keeper.
Callum scored a superb solo goal after a run from his own half in the 45th minute beating several defenders along the way. 5:0.
In the 47th and 49th minute Moss Rose caught the Warriors defence napping and scored two quick goals of their own. 5:2.
The Warriors quickly got back on the offensive in search of more goals. Callum’s shot after 51 minutes was saved by the keeper pushing the ball behind for a corner. The corner taken by Harry found Callum unmarked on the near post and he headed towards goal to score. 6:2. Shortly afterwards Callum was unfortunate not to get a deserved hat-trick when pressing the Moss Rose defenders he created a shooting opportunity but the keeper saved low near the post.
The Warriors finished the game with a goal in the last minute. Robbie’s shot hit the cross bar and bounced down towards Harley followed the shot in to knock the ball over the line.
Full time 7:2.
The Warriors put in a complete team performance today and recent emphasis on slick passing was in clear evidence. The team play continues to go from strength to strength. It was also pleasing to see the team play with intelligence in the first half when the weather was against them.
Callum was awarded the man of the match following an energetic performance with strong running, pressing and capped off with two great goals. Well done Callum!
Next up is a home game against Congleton Rovers U12 Blues next Sunday.
