First Game - First 3 Points!!
(Howard Crompton 08/09/2019)
And we’re up and running - first game of the season at home to Frodsham U18. An early 1.15 kick-off got us going with Witton on the front foot looking to use our wide players and space, with positive early signs that they could have a massive impact on the game. Ten minutes in we have an early scare with Frodsham winning a free-kick on the edge, terrifically struck just clipping the cross bar and showing us we weren’t going to have it all our own way. More pressure from Witton with the midfield now starting to take control of the game - Josh spraying the ball left to right and Jack and Aaron both coming close to scoring. With Frodsham trying to catch us on the counter they found themselves coming up against a remarkable performance from Owen H at the back looking 10 feet tall, Aiden and Connor winning everything in the air and Max playing like a sweeper - top performance from these lads. After mounting pressure and a couple of corners it finally paid off, with Aiden winning another header this time in the Frodsham box and scoring his first for the team 1-0. Quick change out wide bringing Olly Muz on to replace the ever running Olly Slaney and giving us even more of an attacking threat. This was however short lived, Muzza having to be replaced after being 'clothes-lined' by their number 14, nose bursting, blood on the pitch, First Aid Fiona to the rescue. Birthday boy Tommy replaces Muzza. A Frodsham corner causes a little scare at the back resulting in Max making a smart save and keeping us on our toes, half-time 1-0. Changes made with Ben coming on to make his debut, Sam giving us another option up front linking the midfield and attack, and Owen B coming on out wide (strength in numbers), second half starting the same with Witton on the front foot and the wide players enjoying themselves, again it was just not falling for us. Soon enough it came with some very unselfish play from Sam on the edge of the box feeding the ball to Tommy who fires a low shot back across the keeper into the bottom corner 2-0. Still Frodsham kept us on our toes trying to rough us up a little. We stood our ground and let the football do the talking, mounting more pressure and forcing the Frodsham keeper into a couple of good saves. With the game coming to a close, a last few tactical changes sees the game out 2-0. Worthy winners. Big shout out to Jordy who, because of numbers, knew he wouldn't be getting a game, but still came down to support us. Throughout the season when players do have to be rested, I hope they take a leaf out of Jordy's book.
