It's A Cruel Game
(Howard Crompton 22/09/2019)
Today we entertained Alsager Gunners under 18s. We started strong on the front foot with the lads moving the ball a lot quicker than last week, creating chances, however around the 7 minute mark we found out what Alsager were all about.... a swift counter attack, the ball over the top resulting in - you guessed it - a penalty! Nothing Max could do, 1-0 to Alsager. This didn’t change the way we went about our business - moving the ball quickly into the wide areas and getting into 1 on 1 situations with the full backs. Again, half chances (or full on chances - call them whatever you want) went by, with us starting to force the play. A quick change brings Aaron on up top, soon resulting in us getting the equaliser after his constant pressure in the Alsager box. However, Alsager are still put the pressure on, with the constant threat of counter-attack, keeping us on our toes. Ben now getting to grips with the lightning quick forward nullifies the threat, more chances go by with the Alsager keeper pulling off a couple of great stops - most notably one from Matty, keeping it level at the break 1-1.
The second 45 minutes found us parked in the Alsager half and again the keeper managing to keep Alsager in the game, until they get a lucky break and what was possibly more of a clearance to ease the pressure somehow going in over Max’s head, 2-1 Alsager. Still we attack but somehow Alsager keep out Owen H’s header then going on the counter again forcing Max into a great stop in the 1 on 1 situation. With time running out Jack challenges the keeper and the ball falls to Olly S with the ball somehow going wide. Never slowing down, the lads constantly rally, resulting in a terrific lofted ball over the top - Jack rises highest to head over the keeper, 2-2. In the dying minutes - countless corners, with Alsager on their knees praying for the whistle. Game ends 2-2. After last weeks defeat the lads can be extremely proud of their performance today, it just wasn’t to be. On any other day we could have hit double figures. Heads high lads - terrific performance.
