Another Footballing Lesson Learnt
(Howard Crompton 14/10/2019)
This game looked physical from the outset but nothing ‘nasty’ all played in the right spirit. The view from the side lines was we looked the better footballing side even early on. But it’s a funny old game footy and one minute Aiden was striking the ball towards the opposition goal from 35 yards out and came very close – but within minutes Macc had a counter attack and there was Aiden at the other end of the pitch with Macc coming off best when the ref blows and points to the penalty spot. The popular view was that it happened outside the box – but the ref was having a good game and he saw it as a penalty. Nothing Max could do, 1 – 0 to Macc after 20 mins. On 30 mins we saw a superb strike from Tom forcing the keeper into a world class save. The subsequent corner saw us attack again and the Macc keeper pulled off another two great saves. We were looking really strong until on the 44th minute when Macc scored from a corner - a scrambled ball hitting one of their players and ricocheting into our goal. 2 – 0 to Macc at half time.
We started the second half very strong and looked like scoring on more than one occasion – until guess what? Yep you guessed it, we give away a penalty - this time from Connor going to ground as a Macc player is heading for a one on one with Max. 3 – 0 to Macc. Now we really started to play – and if we take anything from this game we played some lovely football. Jordan was now on the pitch and we saw some great one touch football. One of these moves involved ten one touch passes (!!!) with the ball landing at the feet of Jack who curls a sublime ball into the top right hand corner – real class. 3 – 1 . We did the same two minutes later again with Jordan involved resulting in Macc's number 5 being sent off as they took Jack out as he was heading to the goal.
Lesson learnt - we can’t just be the better footballing team we must be ruthless (and stop giving away penalties!!!).
Stand out player goes to Jordan who patiently sat waiting in the wings for his moment - he was involved in some of our best football when he got on the pitch. An excellent individual performance.
