League Cup - Macclesfield Boys
(Colin Latter 24/11/2019)
Today was the return of the League Cup and today's visitors were Macclesfield Boys who are a Division 1 team. The boys were up for the game today and when we gave them the perspective that in a League of ALL teams this team was only one position above us.
The boys were confident of their ability to win this given previous performances against Division 1 teams and the confidence those results have given them was evident in the pre-match talk. As we kicked off the game was a reasonably close game with each team putting in efforts to break down. On balance we probably had the better possession and eventually after 10 minutes the first goal was scored by Alex. This was then followed up by an excellent piece of footwork and skill by Harvey to get through 3 players and slot the ball home for the second goal. Meanwhile at the other end Sam pulled off a superb point blank save to keep the clean sheet intact up to half time.
The second half was started with the same team and immediately Tom went down the opponents end and scored. From this point forward it started to become one-way traffic with very little trouble caused to the back for who were once again absolutely solid. Ethan made some great tackles and then backed that up with some excellent ball distribution down the wing to Jack to run onto. The pressure the boys put on the opposition soon paid dividends with Alex completing a hat-trick plus an own goal (which Tom C was still trying to claim at the end of the game) saw us end up worthy 6-0 winners. The score flattered the opponents as it should have been a lot more however there was an exceptional display of goalkeeping by the opponents keeper who pulled off possibly one of the best saves of this season in the first half from an absolute rocket from distance for Tom B. It was top corner bound but it was some save. Both Steve and myself went straight over to him at the end of the game because he was brilliant (and that was no understatement) and kept Macclesfield in the game and prevented a cricket score.
Parents Man of the Match went to Harvey for a great goal and solid performance in midfield. Managers Man of the Match went -to Alex for his hat trick.
That win moves us in to the quarter finals and what looks like another 1st Division team for opposition.
