Another Alsager Battle!
(Howard Crompton 01/12/2019)
Within minutes of the whistle blowing you could see that Witton were the much better footballing team but there was real danger in the opposition...in particular their number 16. Straight away there was a strong attack from our boys and the Alsager keeper made a double save. Totally against the run of play their number 16 does some funky football magic and they score. 1 – 0.
Sam and Ben were both having a big influence on the game and it was a piece of soccer sorcery by Sam as he managed to leave two Alsager players looking in the wrong direction as he turned with the ball and then sent a deft pass through to Jack who showed some real composure to bring the game all square. 1 – 1.
Just as I’m catching my breath and licking the end of my pencil to write about our awesome goal, Alsager send a long ball to number 16 again who fired a stinging shot that Max was only able to parry a short distance before number 16 tapped in his second goal. 2 – 1.
It would be remiss of me not to mention the performances of Aiden, Jordan and Evan in the first half who were excellent. We continued to press Alsager and we had the majority of the possession forcing their keeper make a few good saves. I had already written in my little brown book that we had lost the first half when to my surprise our boys’ determination resulted in a really scrappy moment in the Alsager box and Ben had the foresight to ‘toe poke’ the ball underneath a scrambling keeper. 2 – 2.
Well surely that is the end of drama right? Hell no!!! An Alsager attack resulted in some real chaos in the Witton defence until the ball bounced off a defender into Max’s arms. Phew! Relief you would think - until the Ref gave an indirect free kick from 10 yards out. Whaaaaaaaat? All the guys come running back to help the defence but Evan was very shrewd and took a position to the side of the free kick - as soon as Alsager touched it he ran it down forcing them to shoot and hit the bar, well done Evan. Half Time 2 – 2.
Second half - some changes of personnel showing our strength in depth and we piled on the pressure again. You could feel a big difference having Josh on the pitch. I was talking to the guys at the side of the pitch when Jordan made the premonition that Muzzer was going to score and also hit the bar when up pops up Ben again to play a beautiful ball through to Muzzer and he was so cool the way he slotted it home. 3 – 2.
While I was writing my notes up Alsager took the ball again and we all witnessed their number 16 show some amazing football skills before slamming the ball past Max to make it 3 – 3. Within a few minutes it was beginning to feel like ‘ground hog day’. Alsager slipped the ball to 16 and he managed get his fourth goal 4 -3. Muzzer almost got the equaliser but he hit the post! Jordan’s predictions are incredible. Now, that was it surely, I was exhausted watching these boys but Witton were not going to give up and another goal mouth scramble resulted in Matty forcing the ball over the line making it all square. Final score 4 – 4.
An incredible match and we certainly had our money’s worth – we should feel very proud of our players. And remember - if Jordan offers you an ‘in play’ prediction take the tip!
