District Cup Quarter Final - Holmes Chapel Reds
(Colin Latter 08/12/2019)
Having beaten a 1st Division team to reach the quarter final stages of the District Cup, we welcomed Holmes Chapel Hurricanes who are currently 3rd in the 1st Division. The pitch was in good condition and the weather, whilst chilly, was a tricky one to judge due to the wind.
During the warm up the colder weather had certainly affected the boys as they just weren't there and a "rare" 2nd chat with them began to focus their minds as we were worried they weren't up for the game.
Then at kick-off things started to click. It was definitely not the best performance the boys have had this year but they battled through and were soon behind from the Holmes Chapel Reds No.9 who was a real handful. The boys were struggling coping with the wind and over hit many through balls but the potential was there. Sam pulled off a cracking save to keep the team in the game just before half time.
The old cliche of a game of two halves was soon to become evident as a couple of substitutions were made to change things up and the boys kicked into gear finally and started to put Holmes Chapel under pressure and it soon told. They put Holmes Chapel under pressure and eventually resulted in a well earned equaliser from Tom. It was almost in slow motion as it took so long for the ball tho cross the line. Then the tide really beagn to turn. The boys managed to tame Holmes Chapels No.9
As the boys kept the pressure on there was a move involving a ball to the right wing and Jack battled down the right wing and put in a cross that was begging to be be connected with and Tom duly obliged with a header to go 2-1 up. The last 10 minutes of the game were a tense affair with a few physical challenges on the limit going in from Holmes Chapel as they were getting more desperate for an equaliser. The defence were rock solid with a couple more decent saves from Sam kept the score at 2-1 until finally the whistle blew and we had won and the boys rightly celebrated with each other on the pitch for a hard fought victory. A good results in the end that was ground out through hard work and determination.
Harvey proved to be an absolute rock in defence and defensive midfield role and was a constant thorn in the side of Holmes Chapels attack and was rewarded with both the Players and Managers Man of the Match. The Parents Man of the Match was also awarded to Sam C for his saves that kept the team in the match.
