8/12/19 Wolves V Sandbach Eagles
(Riz Mansoor 10/12/2019)
Following the euphoria of beating the league leaders in our previous match we came down to earth with a bit of bump against Sandbach who had lost all five of their previous league games. Whether it was due to over-confidence on the part of the boys, or some of them being under the weather with the various bugs which are currently doing the rounds, it was unclear, but our overall performance was somewhat lethargic. As a result we almost undid the excellent result achieved against Grappenhall Gladiators.
Having squandered a number of early chances we eventually took the lead thanks to a goal from Nickie only for this to be immediately cancelled out by the opposition. Two further goals were traded by both sides, ours coming from Charlie B and another from Nickie. We then went 4-3 behind and things were looking bleak until Charlie B tried his luck with a long range shot which went towards the keeper but unfortunately (fortunately for us!) he slipped going towards the ball and it rolled into the net. With around five minutes to go the ball bobbled around the Sandbach goal and Fraser slotted the ball home. 5-4, and victory snatched from the jaws of defeat, although we almost managed to throw this away in the last minute with some lax defensive work.
The whistle went and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
In summary, although we did play some excellent passing football at times we lacked competitiveness and, defensively as a team, were second best in a lot of our challenges. We were extremely wayward in our finishing and could quite easily have doubled our score. Having said that we won and are now joint league leaders (doesn’t that sound good!). Despite this low key report I am very proud of the team as I am sure all of the parents are. Hopefully for the future the boys will have learnt that the opposition cannot be taken for granted and that you have to compete in very game.
Scorers: Nickie (2)
Charlie B (2)
Fraser (1)
MoM: Samuel
Regards, Mike.
