Northwich Vics - District Cup Semi Final
(Colin Latter 21/01/2020)
Having postponed the morning kick off to 2pm due to the fog we turned up wondering if a bell was needed for the ball as it was still foggy but at least we could see the pitch but we couldn't see what was about to come next. During the warm up there is a drill we do that usually tells us whether the boys are "on it" or not and boy were they "on it".
From the kick off the boys weathered an initial storm from Vics and the first of many good saves from Sam kept us in the game. As the game progressed the confidence grew and the commitment can best be summed up when Scott had to be retrieved from the crowd after a crunching tackle saw him fly through the ropes and the crowd. (We didn't see it from the far side due to the foggy conditions)
We went in at half time deservedly level at 0-0 despite a superb four touch move which saw Tom B volley a ball goal bound only for it to be tipped onto the bar by the Vics goalkeeper.
Second half was more of the same with some tactical substitutions made to keep the attacks in check from Vics and the attacks from Tom up front.
Full time came and it was still 0-0. A fair result. Time for the dreaded penalties.
Vics took the first penalty which Sam guessed right and saved, unfortunately then rolling backwards over the line, 1-0 Vics. Tom C took our first penalty and nearly burst the net, 1-1.
Next penalties for both teams were scored 2-2
Vics next penalty was blasted over the bar and up steps Harvey to score 3-2
Both the next penalties were then scored 4-3 and then it was Vics next penalty, a must score to stay in the game. Sam, having gone the right way on all the previous penalties guessed right again and saved it. This time he didn't roll over his line and then the celebrations started, We had won the District FA Cup semi final. Sam was mobbed by his team mates (and coaches) and he deservedly got both Man of the Match awards for his performance. The whole team played to their strengths and pulled together as a team to get the result their performance deserved.
We said it was winnable!
