District Cup Vs Willaston White Star
(Colin Latter 08/03/2020)
The District Cup final saw us playing probably the best team in the Mid Cheshire league (with up to 8 Junior Premier League players in their side and rarely having lost in Division 1) so it was going to be a big ask of the boys.
The pre-match team talk was full of positives and highlighting that the boys, although underdogs in real terms, had nothing to lose and it was down to them to show passion, intensity and integrity in their play and just go for it. We asked that each player just gave 100% for the duration, we couldn't ask for anymore than that.
First half the boys took the bull by the horns and set about making Willaston White Star work to stay in the game. I don't think Willaston White Star expected us to take the game to them but we did and put them under a lot of pressure throughout the half and, disappointingly, we got to half time 0-0. Strange to be disappointed with 0-0 as we believe they deserved to be in front at the break. The 2nd half was more of the same but with Willaston White Star starting to string passes together the boys dug deep for another 15 minutes until finally Willaston broke the deadlock. Once the first goal went in they started to find more gaps as the boys started to run out of steam. The second goal for Willaston duly followed but still the boys battled as best they could. Two further last minute goals meant a disappointing 4-0 loss which, to be honest, flattered Willaston's performance.
To put the boys performance into context Willaston beat Congleton Rovers, current Division 1 leaders, 9-1 in a previous round of the cup, this was an excellent performance by our boys and one they should be thoroughly proud of. We'd asked them to give a 100% and I think they gave at least that and more with their performance.
