5 A LIVE FOR WITTON AGAIN!
(Andy Forbes 29/03/2015)
Witton Albion Wolves welcomed Alex and his Middlewich gang to the NCC Bowl as the torrential rain slashed across a wet ‘n’ wild Northwich on Saturday. “Mmm a cricket pitch” murmured the envious-looking Town chief as he gazed over the pristine Witton turf.
As kick-off arrived the crowd were looking somewhat sparse, in fact the Carol and Clare were looking like they’d got to the party too early as Witton decided to attack and it was Lewis who ended the recent goal drought by calmly slipping the ball into the net. The remainder of the Witton support decided to drag themselves out of the café and seemed astonished that the game had kicked off and nearly spat their frosted bacon bap crumbs out as the loyal fans told them the score. The Albs were looking dominant and pressure from Ollie up front led to some comical pinball in the area before Theo was able to stroke the ball into a semi-guarded net. Sergeant Wilko was providing ample cover in the holding role and Finn was marshalling the defence well on the few times that they were threatened. Alex, grabbing another clean sheet, launched a rocket which landed at Keegan’s feet, who gleefully sprinted clear and slotted home with ease.
After the usual half time berating by the manager, the Wolves performed the usual second half “hangover” and dropped too deep, with some heroic defending by Ewan keeping Middlewich at bay. The home supporters were purring at the way that Ewan and Finn were bringing the ball out of defence. A small period of pressure from Middlewich and a flurry of corners provoked an onslaught from Witton, a great pass out from Elliot J put Luke, also looking rather sprightly, in space and from the resulting corner melee Noah smacked the ball home from the edge of the box. Thomas was looking really lively and set up Ollie for a strong shot that the keeper saved, which Tom strode forward to stroke into the net to be denied by what can only be described as a miraculous save by the Middlewich keeper. Chance after chance went begging, but in the last minute captain Lewis ghosted into the area and imperiously smashed the ball into the far corner.
As the Witton fans negotiated the goals into their storage, there were a few misty eyes as Witton bade farewell to the NCC Bowl for another season. “It’s just lovely and flat like a cricket pitch” blurted the manager.
Captain’s Man of the Match: Theo
Managers Man of the Match: Ewan
Magic moment: Elliot J; a lovely calm dummy pass.
Quote of the day: “that’s the THIRD time!”
Attendance: 38
