FUN AT THE BUN!
(Andy Forbes 26/04/2015)
After yet another stalemate with the Witton Wasps on Tuesday, Witton Wolves were hungry for more football. After a surprisingly easy and pleasant drive through rural Cheshire, Witton were greeted by a horde of orange clad Bunburyites emitting a volume similar to errr something loud. After the initial shock to the ears, opposition manager Jeff announced that Bunbury were unbeaten since October and were in the semi-final of the Chester Cup. Uh oh…
Witton warmed up with banter and hard-assed (if that is not permissable on a family-oriented publication then please accept our apologies) tackling and voted Alex P as the guest striker to have a go up front and he was all over the harassed-looking Bunbury defence early on with a great pass that led to Thomas smacking home a great left foot volley. Noah breezed up, surprisingly sprightly after his “all-nighter” and demanded to be let loose. Witton were dominant and went close as Theo walloped one narrowly wide after some great skill on the left flank. Elliot J was the bossing his area, with a fantastic close-down and a low save (sshhh the ref gave a goal kick but the crowd saw it). Although Witton were looking good, a momentary lapse at the back led to an equaliser just before half time.
Spared the usual half-time berating by an unusually relaxed manager, the Wittoners veritably skipped onto the pitch and were soon in the lead when Lewis, again tireless and creative on the right flank, slammed home. Ewan was again showing some lovely skills bringing the ball out of defence and went on a mazy run encompassing the whole pitch which eventually led to the s-l-o-w-e-s-t goal ever seen as Thomas a trickler which struggled to progress over the goal line. Tom A was beefing up the attack and his extra presence helped free space for the hungry Noah who slammed home for a great goal. Finn went close with a long range effort, hoping to repeat his effort from Tuesday. Goal of the day went to Luke who popped up in the box after a great cross from Lewis and headed home, “it came off my face” he exclaimed after the game. As the parents sheltered under a tree from a brief April shower, Witton were finishing matters on the pitch as Thomas completed is hat-trick and Noah passed home with ease.
After the game, the Witton management team were not happy with the overall performance but it was a good result. “I’m off for ice-cream” said the Turkish delight loving chief as he jumped in his car for a speedy getaway.
Quote of the day: “Keep yer eyes on the game manager!”
Captain’s man of the match: Theo
Managers man of the match: Noah
Magic moment: Ewan’s fantastic run – great feet and pace
