The NCC Bowl witnessed a historic moment today as two Witton teams went head to head in a competitive match for the first time. Gary and Colin were looking forward to hearing the Wolves manager's penalty groan, whilst the legendary Witton U10 gaffer Tim strode majestically amongst the nearside nettles muttering "I'm sure I left it here somewhere". He was seen staring enviously at the latest whiteboard innovation brought by the chief, with little-player-picture magnets adorning Frosty the Rotivator's pride and joy.
The game started with Witton Wolves slightly under strength but bad luck befell the Wasps as they lost keeper Will to a nasty injury after a wonderful save to keep a shot from Lewis out. Although Wasps threatened a few times, Elliot was saving smartly and kept another clean sheet, whilst Noah and Finn were extremely strong in defence throughout the whole game. Although the substitute goalie Kieren made some good saves he was unable to keep out a speculative Lewis effort after some nice build up play and Wolves were 1-0 up going into the break.
The second half saw more a dominant display from the Wolves although Alex dealt with anything that came through and Elliot W was sweeping nicely in a deep position. The second goal was a trifle lucky, but Ollie was alert and clever when he nipped into steal a goal. Luke came back on and was showing some great skills in the centre, his approach play led to the free kick that Keegan cleverly lofted to the back post where Thomas was able to score with his knee/shin/thigh/stomach/chest (delete as appropriate).
So in the end a deserved win for the Wolves, despite a ferocious end to the game with both teams giving no mercy and the ref seemed relieved to blow the final whistle.
Captain's man of the match: Elliot J
Managers man of the match: Ollie
Magic moment: Ollie's goal - quick thinking wins the day
Quote of the day: "now now, let's not tell porkie pies"
