Under 16 - Wolves
BEARLY THERE!
(Andy Forbes 20/03/2016)
For the second season in a row Witton Wolves finished their league season before any other team in the Mid-Cheshire League. “Thank god that’s over”, “yay, time for tennis” exclaimed the happy parents on the touchline. Nonetheless, again - what a testament to the wonderful NCC Bowl, only one game postponed and that was due to the manager forgetting to shut the freezer door. The Vale army marched onto to the NCC Bowl illegally via the broken-down-fence-by-the-Cheshire-FA-route, led by John and the evergreen Shaun, clad again in a quality woolly hat despite the soaring spring temperatures.
Witton were creating chances with Ollie going agonisingly close early on, but the Albs conceded two goals in the first 20 minutes, but they were both of high quality leaving Elliot J with no chance. An exasperated Elliot, having berated his slovenly defenders, then contented himself by shooting impressive goal-kicks upfield – a great portent for the bigger pitch next season. Sergeant Wilko was striving in midfield but Witton were being dominated for once. The substitutions of substitutions occurred. Four players exchanged and although it took a few minutes for the team to settle down, Witton began to express themselves assertively in defence, Tom A cut out at least three attacks by closing cleverly or sliding, Noah was manfully marshalling the back line and then with some smart quick passing from a Ewan surge, Thomas burst into the box to claim a great one-on-one goal.
The second half saw Witton crank up the pressure but they conceded quite early to go 1-3 down, however the Albs fans were positive and the team rewarded the faith. Luke was keeping almost everything out at centre-back with sumptuous timing on almost every ball and a number of Witton chances resulted as Dan the Man began to impose on the under-pressure Vale defence snapping off a couple of smart shots and passes. Theo was at his irrepressible best, first a shot going close, then a clever corner number 4 and then a crashing header against the bar…but it was skipper Lewis who grabbed a goal in the last ten minutes. Witton chances went wide and high but Alex P saved the team with a fantastic low one-handed save from a free-kick despite some rather strange “wall-placing”. The manager subbed and re-shaped in the last five minutes, with Alex begging to be let loose for the last minute corner and after a bit of pinball, Lewis glouriously smashed home the equaliser.
It was a great game, with Vale clearly in a false position in the league with yet another close-fought game with Witton. The manager was again somewhat benign; “you’re a great set of lads”, “you’ve all been great this season” blustered the red-eyed wally as the chief raised his eyebrows and sighed. One thing all supporters and management could agree on however, was that the team “DID US PROUD THIS SEASON”.
Captain’s man of the match: Dan the Man
Managers man of the match: Theo
Magic moment: Tom A’s great sliding tackle at the end of the first half – patient and well timed!
Quote of the day: “backpass!”……..”backpass?”……”ohh I have to ask don’t I?”
